Dissertation Design: Part 4

This is the final Part of my dissertation work. I wanted to still include the conclusion of my work as I felt most people do not use or include it at all and this would be more beneficial to my work as it sums up the work better than most. I also wanted an index page that used a weird and quirky image to set the pace of the work without saying why it is used and rather let the reader make their own conclusions because of it. The last double spread I wanted to use ripped effects to show the importance of the work but also that it is could be only be found by searching through texts, pages and even rubble. The title page was to include the title despite how long it is, as well as a simple graphic illustration to unify the work. The three words were made in order to show each individual part and how one could use the colours to find that part if the index did not exist. I felt these were a bit chucked together and lacked as much thought as it could have, but it also signifies my work and leaves pondering question which is something I liked to include within my work.

I wanted to work backwards and in a new order in comparison to others because if I wrote my dissertation this way then perhaps designing it this way would also be effective. I feel the use of the background does not work well with these images, however because this chapter is based around whether or not I would use something for aesthetic purposes or rather for something deeper and personal then I feel I do not have to justify it as strongly as I would. The light panel page with only two boxes of text was perhaps the only decent one here. I feel that perhaps I could improve on this but seeing as I still have filler pages to fix perhaps I will lay off on it and see instead what becomes of the rest. Overall this is not a part I am that proud of but then I feel this is the case with a lot of the work. This is something perhaps I could fix during my spare time in preparation for a portfolio review and perhaps even a personal project.

This chapter was based around using the background more to a higher extent than the previous. I wanted each one to reflect the content individually rather than as a group effect. I wanted each layout to be used to heighten the image as well as the type with perhaps the “space” panel and the “box” double spread to be my most favourite of the lot. I felt the “box” was the best set out typographically, editorially and can be the easiest to read and understand should someone fall on this page without much help. This was my proudest with the space being a close second only due to the reminiscence of older comic based designs as well as being a simple yet effective piece that one would not have thought to be related to graphics. I liked this section as I wanted it to be all stitched together in different parts rather than being all printed. This I feel gives it more character and depth than the others.  I prefer my second chapter to this one but like most I feel I will be picky and selective with what I like and what I dislike, this is me as a designer and as a person.

This design layout was the start of my work. I wanted something empathetic pieces that could be seen the readers and for them to visualize themselves in relation to it. I thought the red writing was bold enough to cause a response and with the chapter being interaction I wanted it to be reflective in the imagery. The black and white imagery helps amplify the colour as well as create a mood, a feeling that can be felt, sensed and reflected by the reader. Some areas were text heavy in comparison to others which was more background heavy. The pull out quote I found to work well within this context and the use of comparison between the text amount of the sizing was more helpful towards gaining a true understanding and feel of the work. I felt the use of images helped create a more approachable sense of the dissertation as well make it more connected towards me and my practice. Aside from this I also appreciated how it turned out, it became more professional looking and works well for a decent piece of editorial. For future attempts should it ever be needed. I would attempt to use perhaps illustrative media more.

Dissertation Design- Workshop

Experimenting with layouts and design was part of this workshop. As time went on more and more rules were added until the last piece no longer resembled the first. The first design had limits such as size, kerning and no colours. The second through to the third removed most limitations so our work was legible and acceptably within the limits. Once colours and sizes were more loose, then the hierarchy changed and became easier for use to use and read.

This workshop was designed for us to learn about the limits and rules we can use or not use. We are given freedom to to pursue our dissertations however we want, but this also showed us what loosening rules and tightening them can do for our work and how we want to use them. Colour is something I do not often use much towards my work and Hierarchy is something I can use much more dramatically to my advantage. As the workshop came to a close I found that the work could be experimental and could reflect the piece of text to make it more intriguing and interesting. This has helped with thinking about how I can apply this to my work and what I would create using these skills. I do not have a clear idea of how my work would be made using these but I have at least a starting position and that is helpful enough for me.

Dissertation Design- Tutorial

diss design initial

The tutorial helped with solving my issue of how everything was going to look. Once I was told everything may look different, chapter by chapter. As well as being able to stitch them together then relief was applied. I realize that now I can make a hybrid piece of work, nothing simple or usual like that of myself. But something that greatly amplifies each chapter of my work and allows it to be more intriguingly designed rather than following a simple set format.

I was recommended to look at alternate and weird ways people have attempted dissertations before. This seems more applicable to me and my work as it does not follow standard practice and so the design should reflect this as well. It should also heighten the pull out quotes and capture the essence of the chapters more freely and easily than the standard written format. I should not worry about paper quality or GSM until the final piece is designed and only after that should I start looking into it as the content is more important.

I need to further my ideas and creations of this work but with the help provided. My work can now be seen more clearly within my sites. I will have to probably use trial and error with my creation process.

Dissertation Design: Artist Book Collection

The artists book as well as the design books all helped with trying to figure out how to create my dissertation. Seeing the variety of the books helped with what materials I was going to use for the book as well as what size and how it is presented. I want to use weird and wacky ways for creating the work itself but I do not want to be limited to how this can be showcased. The use of Typography is also a helpful aspect as this is what I am going to use when creating my work. I am less reliant on folds and creating a unique experience for this project and more on the editorial aspect as this is something I often do not attempt and should focus more on. Sizing is something I have not yet thought about and will be something I should focus on coming the future creation. One issue that was pointed out was what GSM I would use and how would it be used effectively. Not only this but also would my work being photographical or illustrative. I have used illustrations before for previous work so perhaps photographs would be something more effective to use here considering the different chapters and how they all link. Overall I feel the tutorials would be more helpful for this as trial and error and less seeing other work yet it has open my mind as to how it can be showcased effectively, especially for my work. This will be a fun yet difficult challenge experience to tackle.

notes-

Book review/ diss prep

Alternative layouts-?!

Think of paper content, size, shape and GSM for reference towards dissertation.

Outside of book cover, spine, feel of the book should be taken into account with your diss

Affordance, interaction and physicality- how could this be used with your diss?

Can be literal In segmentation for each chapter- see yellow multi fold

Keith smith-

Could use die cut or embossing, decoupage

Letterpress indentation and colouring

Perhaps chemical use or composition in relation to the book and it’s negative or positive impact or use

Could the book have an inherent affordable- be a stag alone book/ image or piece and the diss itself as a smart and inherent yet distant form

Do i include testable areas that you have to push out? Will it benefit me and my work? Is it the right thing to do? Explore this area and see if it can be applied as well as possibly see if this could be used in criticality instead

Open source- explore this!
